Six of us sat around the long mahogany table, the air thick with the smell of old books, polished wood, and unresolved tension. The walls of the estate attorney’s office were lined with leather-bound volumes that looked as if they hadn’t been touched in decades. A tall clock ticked steadily behind us, each second stretching longer than the last.

This was supposed to be straightforward.

A formality.

That’s what we’d all told ourselves when we received the letter summoning us there. After all, the will had been written years ago. The expectations were clear. Or so we thought.

Then the estate attorney looked up from the documents, adjusted his glasses—and shot him a strange look.

And in that moment, everything changed.

The Gathering of Heirs

Funerals are emotional. Will readings are strategic.

Everyone arrives pretending to grieve, while quietly calculating what they might gain or lose. It’s an unspoken ritual, and everyone in the room knows it—even if no one admits it.

He sat near the end of the table, calm to the point of indifference. He hadn’t spoken much since arriving, only nodding politely when spoken to. He didn’t fidget. Didn’t scan the room. Didn’t look nervous.

That alone should have raised suspicion.

The rest of us shifted in our chairs, exchanging subtle glances. Old resentments hung in the air like dust particles caught in sunlight. This wasn’t just about money—it was about validation. About being seen. About proving, once and for all, who mattered most.

The Attorney’s Role

The estate attorney was a man who had clearly seen this scene play out many times before.

Gray hair, composed posture, voice measured and precise. He carried himself with the kind of neutrality that suggested he had learned long ago never to get emotionally involved in family affairs. He wasn’t here to comfort us. He was here to execute instructions.
